Swedish Match traces its roots to the Swedish tobacco and match industries of the 19th century, consolidating into its modern corporate form in 1992. New Zealand import regulations distinguish clearly between tobacco-containing products and tobacco-free nicotine pouches. ZYN was launched by Swedish Match in Sweden and the United States in 2016, building on the company's decades of expertise in tobacco-free oral nicotine delivery. By 2023, ZYN held over 70% of the US nicotine pouch market by volume, with 385 million cans sold globally that year – a 62% increase over 2022. PMI's involvement has primarily manifested in significant investment in production capacity expansion – over USD 600 million committed to a new manufacturing facility in Aurora, Colorado, plus ongoing expansion in Owensboro – to meet ZYN demand that Swedish Match as an independent company could not have funded at the same pace.
